The hidden chariot
Chariot races were among the oldest and most exciting competitions of the Panathenaia. Two wheels supported the biga or body of the chariot. A strong shaft attached the horses to the centre of the wheel axle. The charioteer drove the team. The mounting and dismounting hoplites could hold on to the chariot rail. Look at a chariot depicted on the frieze; try to distinguish its parts and to solve the puzzle.
